Shotspotter is a surveillance technology which has been shown by the MacArthur Justice Center to have an 87% False Alarm Rate. It is primarily used by Police Departments to criminalize vulnerable populations by inventing gunshots where none have been detected. Before the summer adjournment, City Council quietly removed an option to fund Shot Spotter for an additional 4 years but will likely try again to fund this wasteful program. We'd like to prevent this from coming to a vote entirely and reinvest the potential 1 million dollars in funding to a more useful program.
